Start A Successful Pet Sitting Business

Own Your Own Pet Sitting Business

More and more people have started to realize that starting a pet sitting business is a wonderful way to earn money and own your own business. It's a perfect business for those who love animals. You'll care for the pets, brush them, feed them and, of course, give them lots of love, hugs and companionship while their owners are away.

An added service you can offer is security for their home while they are gone: turning lights on and off, taking in mail and newspapers, and watering plants.

Even thought it's a pet service, you must also be a people person. You may have wanted to try your hand at pet sitting because you love animals but having some basic business practices will help.

Your Time Commitment

If you are considering starting your own pet-sitting business, begin with a plan. Figure out exactly what time you have available to take care of pets. Add in driving time to and from their homes. Once you have determined this you will know how to market your services. Do not take on more than you can handle.

Calculate What Price To Charge

Next, find out if others in your area offer pet sitting services and find out how much they charge. You should also check kennels so that you can offer your clients competitive prices. Take into consideration how far you want to travel to pet sit. Too many miles away and the price of gas may be an issue.

Do you want to charge more on holidays? Many pet sitters charge extra fees for holidays, something to consider. And pet sitters are in such demand over the holidays they often find their time has been reserved months in advance. Consider hiring helpers during this busy time and add another profit boost. But be sure to introduce your assistants to the owners and pets well in advance of the scheduled pet sitting time. Get the owners go-ahead that your assistant is approved to take care of their pets.

As your business builds, YOU decide how many hours you want to work in a day, a week, a month. The Pet Sitting Business Start-Up Kit shows you how to calculate future income.

Which Pets Will You Sit?

The next thing to do is decide what kinds of pets you want to take care of in your pet sitting business. Some people find it best to work with just small dogs and cats since they require less work and time than larger animals. Some pet sitters take on all types of animals, and that can include everything from hamsters to horses including fish, birds, mice, rabbits and pigs. That's the wonderful aspect to running your business: you have the freedom to choose exactly which pets you would like to care for.

Dog walking services are now very popular. You'll exercise and feed the dogs while the owners are away for the day. Or you can start a doggy day care at your own home. Owners drop off their animals at your place so they can be watched over and excercised during the day. This is a great option if you have a big enough yard.

Forms Provide A Written Log of Your Visit

For the most part, those who use a pet sitting service think of their pets as their children, and small things matter a lot to them. You should provide the owners with a daily written report on exactly how you cared for the pets. The owner then sees evidence that you are putting in extra effort and truly caring for their loved family members.

Leave a Welcome Back form to remind the owners to give you a call to let you know they have arrived - make doubly sure not to leave an abandoned pet because the owner missed their flight home!

The Pet Business Is Booming

The pet sitting business is booming. It is a winning proposition for the business owner, the pet owner and the pet. The business owner gets to do what they love and the pet owner knows their pets will be well taken care of and they can go on a business trip or vacation without worry.

Announce Your Business

A professionally written press release can be a boon to your business. Submit it to your local newspapers and you may free advertising for your new pet business. Your area newspaper editor may receive your press release and decide to write a feature story about you and your pet business.

Pet Sitting Start-Up Business Information

PetSittingKit.com offers a thorough and complete kit for starting a pet sitting business. You don't want to inconvenience your friends or family members by asking them to care for your pet while you're gone. You could board her at the vet, but that is also stressful for her. And you worry about the exposure to the other animals that are sick. An in-home pet sitter seems like the perfect solution. However, you may not know how to go about finding one.

A good place to start looking for a sitter is the International Locator on the Pet Sitters International website. If you submit your zip code (or your country if you live outside of the US), you will get a list of pet care providers in your area. You can also specify the kind of pet you need care for and the types of service you are looking for. It's best to enter just the criteria that are the most important to you. This will produce a bigger list of care givers for you to choose from. You can then click on the names of each of the sitters to find out more about them, including their contact information.

Once you have found a pet sitter who seems to be what you are looking for, you should make arrangements for her to visit your home before you are scheduled to leave. Most sitters will do this at no charge to you. Some pet sitting services employ several sitters, so make sure that the person who is coming to your house for the interview will be the person who makes the actual pet sitting visits while you are gone. You want to make sure that it is someone with whom you are comfortable, because you will be trusting her not only with your precious pet, but also with a key to your house. You also want to observe how the person interacts with your pet. Does your pet seem to like her?

Make sure that the sitter is insured. If anything should happen while you are away, such as your dog getting loose and biting someone, you need to know that you will be covered. Some people feel more secure if the sitter is also bonded, but unless he is an employee of a pet sitting company, bonding is really not necessary.

Feel free to ask for references. If the sitter has been in business for any length of time, she should be able and willing to provide you with a couple of phone numbers or email addresses of satisfied clients for you to contact.

Have a spare key made before the interview, and have it handy when the pet sitter arrives. Then, if you decide to hire him, he will not have to make another trip to your house (most likely at your expense) to pick it up later. Some sitters require two spare keys, which is for your pet's protection as much as for the sitter's. If the sitter should accidentally lock himself out of your house during a visit, it is much faster and easier (not to mention less expensive) for him to go back to the office and get the extra key, than to have to call a locksmith.

The sitter will need a way to reach you while you are gone, as well as the phone number and address of your veterinarian, and perhaps a neighbor or a friend who may be called upon in an emergency. Make sure you have all the information on hand that the pet sitter might need in your absence. It is better to provide more information than will be needed, than for the sitter to need a bit of info in an emergency and not be able to find it.

You can do a Google search for pet sitters in your area to compare prices, but don't choose your sitter by price alone. You are trusting her with your baby and also your home. Choose someone who knows the value of the service they provide and takes her responsibility seriously.

Membership in one or more pet sitting organizations may indicate that the pet sitter is serious about his pet sitting business, but beyond that, it does not tell you a great deal. Anyone can join a pet sitting organization if they pay a fee. There is also no pet sitting license available, so if someone says they are a licensed, it merely means that they have a business license and pay their taxes.

Hiring a pet sitter is not that difficult if you know what to look for. Start your search at least several weeks before you have to leave, and you will have plenty of time to work out all the details. Your pet will thank you for it!

Susan is an animal lover and a former pet sitting business owner. She is currently owned by a Ragdoll cat, whom she adores.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Susan_Spencer
http://EzineArticles.com/?How-To-Hire-A-Pet-Sitter&id=962310

Pet Travel Services

A pet owner should check the credentials of this pet sitter to verify that they do have the necessary training to take care of your furry family member as well as being bonded and insured. Also, it is common knowledge in the pet care industry that utilizing a professional pet sitter is far superior to boarding .Often when boarded, our pets hear unfamiliar noises around them including other pets in pain and the stress of not seeing their owners or family members creates measurable stress on the family pet. Pet sitters are particularly important when you need your pets cared for in your home in the event that illness or injury occurs and the pet owner is unable to provide daily care for the animals. Professional pet sitters have received training in regards to your pet’s well being to include emergency care. According to research pet families are doing more to care for their pets. In the United States 71% of households have pets and 37% of pet owners consider their pets important family members. Spending on pets has more than doubled from $17 billion in 1994 to over $40 billion in 2006, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA). Over $10 billion of that amount was spent on health care and boarding of those pets. Pet sitting is the superior alternative to kenneling or boarding if just to reduce pet stress say industry experts.

Get A Pet Sitter

What should I do if I am leaving town and need a place to keep my dog?

If you are going away for a while, it is imperative that your dog is taken care of. Dog day care is something you should look into as well as a dog kennel. Boarding your dog is a great idea because the caretakers will treat your dog well, as they are educated and have the best products and cares for your pet. If you decide to gat a pet sitter, there are a few things that you will want to do in order to ensure that everything goes according to plan.
One of the first things that you can do is to prepare detailed instructions for your pet sitter. Include your phone numbers of where you can be reached in the event of an emergency. You will also need to give your pet sitter the name and phone number of your vet. Make sure that you also ask for other client references. These will help you get a clearer idea of what to expect if you hire this person.

It is also important to get pet insurance just so that you will not have to deal with any repercussions of carelessness. Bonding and insurance protects you in the case of damage or theft of your property. However, it does not ensure that the pet sitter is reliable, caring or trustworthy. These traits can often be determined from their former employers.

In addition, it is a good idea to set up a meeting in your home with each potential pet sitter. Watch how the sitter relates or interacts with your dog. Are they actively involved with the dog or are they distant or restrained around them? Does your dog want the pet sitter’s attention? If your dog and the person interviewed do not seem to click, keep interviewing until you find a good match.

A reliable and dedicated sitter will take notes for the details of your unique dog routines. They should ask you questions, and be concerned of trying to maintain the same routine as the dog has been use to. If they do not ask questions or take notes from you, keep interviewing. You can also ask trusted friends or family members if they can recommend a pet sitter they have used. A professional pet sitter should belong to an organization such as PSI (Pet Sitters International) or NAPPS (National Association of Professional Pet Sitters). However, remember these national organizations do not know these individuals or their reputation. Instead, ask for local affiliations and follow-up.

When dealing with a pet sitter, make sure that you ask them for a copy of their contract. Then you will have to carefully review the details. A contract will protect you and your dog. It will also spell out exactly what you can and cannot expect from the pet sitter. It should also list the appropriate rates for all services offered. Do not hesitate to ask questions. Next, you should arrange for the pet sitter to spend some alone time with your dog. A walk is a great idea. Monitor your dog’s reaction. Is he happy and comfortable with the pet sitter? Or does he seem eager to get away from them? This also gives the pet sitter a chance to see if they can appropriately handle your dog (particularly if the dog is a large-breed, strong or very energetic).
By: Groshan Fabiola

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

So if you want to find more about wag the dog or about pet sitting or even about pet sitting services please click these links.

Pet sitting

If you were to sit down and make a list of all the pet services available to pet owners, it would take you an eternity. If you have an issue concerning your pet, no matter what kind of animal you have, chances are, there is someone close by to help you with a solution, so there is no need to worry yourself. Pet services, in general, can mean a lot of things to different people. There are also different services depending on the genre of pet you have. Typically, the more popular the type of pet, the more services you will find to help you with your concerns.

Most providers of pet services are pet lovers, and they are doing what they do with the inerest of the animal in mind. Unfortunately, sometimes the need for pet services arises due to a bad situation, such as a lost pet or an abused pet, and they neeed to be rescued. Animal rescue and animal shelters are among the most important of them all, and are there to help control the population of stray animals, and ultimately to save lives. It's a shame that most of these types of pet services are non-profit organizations, because they often cannot hold on to these animals for ever. If you are looking to get a pet, this is where you will find animals that are up for adoption. Some of the animals have been abandoned, lost or abused, and they really need someone to take them in and take care of them.
As we stated earlier, rescue shelters are just one variation of pet services there to help with pet concerns. Maybe you need someone to take your dog for a walk, or you need to learn how to groom your pet, or your parrot needs medical help. Other examples of pet services can include providers of pet insurance, dog training, pet boarding for when you are out of town, or even breeders. If you need to know more about pet services, or you are seeking pet advice, this is a great place to start. We have put forth this resource to help people with their pet needs, and we hope that you have found it useful.
By: Dean Cecere

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Dean Cecere is author and contributor of resourceful articles providing information to pet owners.
